April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April 13, 2016 | News | The Office of The Palisades Dentists

Oral Cancer Awareness Month is a key opportunity to raise awareness about cancers affecting the mouth, tongue, throat, and tonsils. In 2016, one person will suffer from oral cancer every hour of every day. But oral cancer is also highly preventable and treatable- thanks to improved noninvasive detection technology and dental healthcare practitioners’ screenings. When found at early stages of development, oral cancers have an 80-90{d13b5af0e856603eb157ef850da6b3cf580a5fbaf385b75abbf81756b53ef934} survival rate. Unfortunately, the high death rate is often due to late stage diagnosis. “Science and prioritizing prevention has put us in a remarkable position to protect our patients from oral cancer, but technology is only half the battle “ said Dr. LeVine. “It’s imperative we continue efforts that not only promote greater health care education, but that we also assess our patients’ habits and describe high risk sites and early appearance of suspicious lesions.” Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, age, sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, a diet deficient in fruits and vegetables, and secondhand smoke are also risk factors associated with oral cancer. Our role is to educate our patients about the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of oral cancer. An informed patient is our favorite patient….so from our office to you….
